It has been an honor for Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (Official) represented by @habibie razak, Executive Director to share our thoughts and ideas by presenting technical slides related to “the Challenges of Construction Industry, How to Enhance the Sustainability on Indonesia’s Infrastructure Development” in front of 2024 China – ASEAN Engineers Forum which has been held at Hall of China Science and Technology from 14 to 16 October 2024.
The theme of the forum is “Engineering Innovation and Green Development for Mutual Benefit” and was officially opened by Dr. Luo Hui Joint Secretary General of CSE.
The forum invited several speakers in various industries and organizations in China and ASEAN.
PII Delegates who are attending the forum led by Ir. Bambang Goeritno (Secretary General), Dr. Ir. Arlan Septia (Treasurer), Ir. Dandung Sri Harninto (Vice Secretart General), Prof. Ir. Michael Goutama (Vice Chairman of International Committee) and Ir. Habibie Razak (Executive Director).
Ir. Habibie Razak explained, the construction industry is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, accounting for nearly 40% of global energy-related emissions, with embodied carbon from building materials accounting for a significant portion. As climate change intensifies, with record-breaking storms, droughts, and fires becoming more frequent, addressing embodied carbon is critical for achieving sustainability goals. This presentation explores the challenges and opportunities of reducing embodied carbon in the Indonesian construction sector.
Focusing on the lifecycle emissions of materials such as concrete, which alone accounts for up to 10% of global carbon emissions, this presentation discusses strategies for mitigating the environmental impact through innovative design, material selection, and adoption of low-carbon technologies.
Additionally, the role of engineers in driving sustainable practices and the importance of global regulations and standards are emphasised. By showcasing examples of effective carbon reduction approaches and highlighting regulatory frameworks, this presentation aims to provide actionable insights for transitioning to a more sustainable, low-carbon construction future in Indonesia.
PII also discussed 3 different topics with Chinese Society of Engineers (CSE) separately as follows; the E-20 engagement group under B20, the establishment of International Federation of Engineering Society for Road and Belt and The MRA on Engineers recognition between CSE & PII.
The engineering organization and country attending the forum are IEM Malaysia, Philippines Technological Council (PTC) Philippines, Fed of Myanmar Engineering Society (Fed MES) Myanmar, The Engineering Institute of Thailand, Council of Engineers Thailand, Myanmar Engineering Council (MEngC), Board of Engineers Cambodia & Chinese Society of Engineers (CSE).
